Lord of the Flies Audiobook Review

I was a little disappointed after listening to this book. Expectations were different, and as is often the case, they were not met. On the other hand, this work, written by William Golding in 1954, provides food for thought and serves as a kind of manual on how not to organize new communities, states, etc. I downloaded it from https://www.bookscougar.com/audiobook/lord-of-the-flies/ and I highly recommend this website to everyone. It’s fast and has tens of thousands of audiobooks.

“Lord of the flies” audiobook is similar to some books about the Apocalypse. Maybe someone remembers: after that very Apocalypse, a handful of people survive. It goes without saying that they are trying to build a new society. Build on old concepts. As a rule, a new leader is chosen, a very worthy person, and let’s say “democratic”. What’s next? The scenarios are usually the same. Much chatter and little action. And when someone offers something other than chatter, more real (food, shelter), then people are already following the new leader, despite the fact that they can be a very bad person.

The above paragraph, in theory, is almost similar to the development of events in “Lord of the flies”, with one exception: in the novel, the main characters are children. And children under twelve years of age.

I was confused by the fact that the novel does not explain how the boys got to this island. Shipwreck? Probably, yes but nevertheless, the complete absence of adults is too strange…

Let’s leave this fact aside.

What do we see at the beginning of the novel? A lot of small “gentlemen”, produced in England, find themselves on an island that can be considered a Paradise. Fruit, tropical weather, and complete absence of adults. Initially, there are no “bad guys” among them, except for Roger, who is not particularly mentioned in the beginning.

Ralph. The main characters are Ralph and Jack. Two leaders. But it just so happens that the guys choose Ralph, a simple boy who has no idea how to organize everything correctly. Ralph is not an angel, he’s just an ordinary honest guy with the right ideas and principles.

Jack. The second boy, Jack, the leader of the children’s choir, comes to terms with being left out of power. He will get the role of “hunter”, a forager. He hunts wild pigs, of which there were many on the island. The new “democratic government”, represented by Ralph, immediately concedes, leaving Jack with his personal army of chorus boys.

Simon and Piggy. Simon is the strangest figure in this novel. You can understand Jack, who had his own ideas and principles, but Simon… Of course, somewhere in England, he would just be considered a strange boy, not from this world, but here on the island Simon is the “weak link”. As is Piggy. Being the object of ridicule for being overweight, he was mentally superior to absolutely all the characters. And they don’t like smart people. Especially the dictators.

You can probably imagine further events. We accept the fact that the main characters are children. And the children are cruel. They are much closer to animals, it is much easier for them to roll back to their pristine state. Therefore, everything that happened afterward was not particularly surprising.

I knew perfectly well that Ralph was just a child, spoiled by civilization, and the foundations of a new society were unknown to him. However, I was enraged by his stubbornness about the fire and the smoke. Of course, it was necessary, but his whining no longer inspired anyone.

In general, it turned out as I wrote at the very beginning of the review. I didn’t like the novel very much, but it really caught me, and when I went to bed, I was already preparing some thoughts, suggestions, and paragraphs for writing this review.

There is no blood in the book as in the “Deadkidsongs” that I recently read. The novel “Lord of the flies” was written a long time ago, but its task is not to frighten the listener with the sight of blood and guts, rather show how quickly little angels can turn into small, but evil animals.…

Do You Love Audiobooks As Much As I Do?

To be honest, I’m a real audiobook maniac!

The story of my addiction began almost 11 years ago when my youngest daughter was born. The baby slept only in a rolling stroller, so I had to walk for 2-3 hours every day in any weather. Walking the streets is just so boring, but you can’t read a book on the go and even pushing a stroller. This is where I discovered the world of audiobooks!

It turned out that even with a lack of free time, you can listen to a lot of books! I do all the household chores — washing, cleaning, cooking-with headphones. Work in the garden also takes place under listening to books. Trips, vacations, needlework, the way to work and back — everywhere I am accompanied by my old faithful MP3 player, swollen from stuffed folders with files.

Over the years, I have re-read or rather re-listened to a lot of new books, returned to those that I had already read before. I remember the impression made on me, already an adult, the novel “Fathers and Sons”! In school, there was one perception, in adulthood — completely different! I don’t know if I would ever have gotten to rereading the same “Notre Dame”, “Anna Karenina”, “Jane Eyre” and other books I read in my youth. And when I found them in the audio version, I couldn’t pass them by and didn’t regret a bit! Familiar stories and characters are revealed from a new side, the characters and actions of the characters from the height of the lived years are evaluated differently! And how many new authors I have discovered!

It’s interesting that I have associations with books. For example, “Brody’s Castle” is a raspberry flavor. It was for this book that last year I collected these berries and made jam. But Yu Nesbe is an endless highway because I listened to his ” bat ” on the way to a business trip and back. Max fry — a pile of maple leaves in the autumn Park, through which I took my first-grade daughter to school and back.

But my daughters don’t like audiobooks. We have a long tradition — I read to them before going to bed. I admit that sometimes I get tired, lazy, I have to finish things. I tried to download and include well-read books for them, but they always ask me to read them myself…

My husband is also heavily “hooked” on audiobooks. We have different literary tastes, but still, sometimes we share our impressions, advise each other what may be liked by the other.

Now the cottage has become a much more important place in our lives than before, and work in the garden and in the house requires more time. It is boring to weed a long bed in silence or paint an endless fence. Again, audiobooks and plays come to the rescue. With them, any monotonous work becomes a pleasure akin to meditation.

Currently, there are sites where audiobooks are placed in the public domain quite legally! There are also old restored recordings of radio plays, books recorded for VOS, and novelties read by both professional actors and Amateur readers.

Of course, if I have free time, I allow myself the luxury of reading a real paper book. It is a special pleasure to rustle pages, to feel the aroma of new paper or the mysterious and slightly dusty smell of an old book. But unfortunately, the eyes are already tired of reading. And it is not often possible to carve out half an hour and completely disconnect from the business.

So again — Long live audiobooks!…

How to Improve Your English Skills With Audiobooks

As you know, the first and main thing that needs to be done to improve the ability to perceive foreign speech is to listen to this speech.

Regularly and as often as possible, using all possible sources.

Nowadays, one such resource quite accessible to any computer user is audiobooks, which are becoming more popular.

Listening to books in a foreign language is really useful, because at the same time you get used to the sound of speech with the correct pronunciation, and replenish your vocabulary.

What books are better to choose for those who not so long ago study English (or another) language and want to improve listening skills?

Do not immediately rush to extremes and upload to the player the works of Oscar Wilde or Virginia Woolf.

Instead, start with something simpler – with fairy tales.

The simple vocabulary and a straightforward plot will help you tune into English, learn to perceive it not as a continuous mishmash of incomprehensible sounds, but as a cohesive chain of words following each other.

For English learners, I would recommend fairy tales such as Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, and Harry Potter would do.

For the same purpose – to get comfortable in an unfamiliar speech – you can listen to various “tabloid novels”, such as “Sex and the City.”

Fiction is characterized by an abundance of dialogue, a simple structure of phrases and, again, a simple set of words.

At the next stage, when you easily understand the general meaning of simple texts when listening to them, you can take more complex audiobooks.

But there is one trick here: why not listen to in English what you have ever read in your own language?

Knowledge of the plot will be a kind of “lifesaver” if foreign vocabulary turns out to be unfamiliar. Here the choice of books depends on your preferences, whether it be Sherlock Holmes, Jane Austen novels or something else.

Generally speaking, learning to hear foreign speech in audiobooks is not so difficult. After all, the text is voiced in a pleasant voice with perfect pronunciation, and the reading speed is usually quite acceptable for perception.

A much bigger problem could be keeping attention on the sounding text.

Therefore, it is recommended to listen to audiobooks in small passages (15-20 minutes each, after which it is worth taking a break), at a volume sufficient for you (such that you can easily hear the narrator).

And, of course, the plot of the book should be interesting to the listener – only then your attention will be concentrated on listening and the use of audiobooks will become most effective for learning the language.…

Advantages of Audiobooks

How nice to sit in a comfortable chair with a volume of your favorite book in your hands on cold winter evenings!

Finally, even the most simple, entertaining reading, eliminates boredom and cheers up.

But it is not always convenient to use print media.

There is almost no place for bulky books in the modern rhythm of life, and some people cannot read because of vision problems.

An excellent alternative to printed books is audiobooks. This is an audio recording of reading a book aloud by professional actors.

You can listen to an audiobook on a tape recorder, computer, or mobile phone. Thus, the reader, or rather, the listener, gets rid of the need to constantly keep a book in front of him and strain his eyesight.

Problems with posture, lighting also disappear, and books become accessible to blind people.

With an audiobook, you are not tied to one place and can safely move within the limits of the device’s audibility.

No obstacles in transport – put on your headphones, and even at rush hour, you can enjoy your favorite work without fear of disturbing anyone.

The voices of the actors will allow you to breathe life into work, turning the room into a theater, and you into a spectator.

Audiobooks have many advantages over printed books and are almost devoid of flaws.

However, before making a choice in favor of audiobooks, think – are you ready to lose the pleasure of holding a fresh volume, smelling of printing ink, and listening to the quiet rustling of its pages?

You decide!…

The more interesting and exciting the work, the easier and faster you can add to your passive vocabulary.

For people who already know the language but temporarily do not use it, it is very useful to read English books in the original in order to preserve their knowledge of the language.

By reading English books, you will strengthen your knowledge of grammar, spelling, expand your vocabulary, and for one get pleasure from interesting and exciting material.

You can find an English book by the author you are interested in by choosing the direction in which the author primarily writes. If you know how to spell the author’s name or the title of the work correctly, you can use the search.

In order to be able to download books for free and choose exactly what You need, You need to know where the books can be taken, at the moment there are many sites offering to download books, you can stop at one of them.

Some read fiction, some read magazines, and some read scientific papers that are relevant to their professional activities. Some people who prefer to read magazines and newspapers rather than books believe that this literature is much more useful than fiction. In some ways, they are right, because in fiction you will not find the vocabulary that is found in real life. In the literature of the new words relate mainly to the different thematic groups.

In this case, it will be difficult for you to remember them, except that you write them down in a notebook along with the sentences and phrases in which they were used. But no one will argue that reading Newspapers and magazines does not bring us the pleasure that we get from reading fiction.

Often people ask whether they need to read literature if they listen to audiobooks.

While listening to audiobooks, you train your perception of information by ear, reading, in this case, is not trained. The ideal option is to listen to some parts of the book, then read it to remember how to write the words, and then translate the words that you did not perceive by ear. After that, it is desirable to listen to this fragment of text several more times.

We don’t always have time to listen to something in audio format, but there are no problems with reading. So, to read something, we need much less time. This does not mean that you do not need to listen to audio recordings, in fact, it is very useful and interesting, to train reading, you need to do exercises and read. Now let’s talk about adapted literature.

Many people wonder whether they should read adapted books. More and more often I hear that adapted literature is harmful because it has a very simple language, and that you need to immediately read the books in the original. But it all depends on how well you speak a foreign language.

If you have an initial level of language, you will not be able to read books in the original. Therefore, if you are learning English, choose adapted literature. Today, bookstores have a huge selection of such literature.

If you do not speak English at a high level, but do not want to read adapted literature, then start by reading small books, you need to get used to reading only in English.

It is up to you to decide which books to read. You must understand that all people like different things. Some like to read detective stories, others love novels. So decide for yourself what you like.

People are also concerned about what to choose for reading, classic or modern literature?

So, it all depends on what you are going to read for, there are a lot of words and phrases in classical works that are not used in everyday life.

Therefore, if you want to Supplement your vocabulary with modern vocabulary, it is better to choose modern literature.

Install the app on your smartphone and use it offline.…
